Our Story
How and why TheKey exists.
For 25+ years, we've been working to change how people live and age at home, demonstrating that with the right support, people can continue living independently, meaningfully, and joyfully in the place they love.

Why TheKey Exists
By 2050, the number of people in the U.S. age 65 and over will swell to 82 million. That's millions of people who will face a critical question: How do I continue living the life I want as I age?
TheKey is here to provide the solution.
We're passionate about helping older adults live well in their own homes as they age to not just survive, but truly thrive. We're reimagining what's possible when people have access to thoughtful, science-backed care that supports not just physical needs, but cognitive, social, and emotional well-being too.
Our mission is simple: improve the quality of life for our clients and the people who love them by making aging at home not just possible, but genuinely fulfilling.
How We’re Different
TheKey has built a unique model of care that delivers the personal touch families deserve with the comprehensive, research-informed approach they need.
Local Care, National Excellence
We provide the best of both worlds: the personal touch of a local care team with expertly trained caregivers from your community, backed by the extensive resources and industry-leading expertise of a national brand.
Science-Backed, Whole-Person Care
We go beyond basic tasks. Our proprietary Balanced Care Method® actively enhances cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being, supporting brain health, meaningful engagement, and quality of life.
Dedicated Care Teams
Every client is supported by a full care team, not just a caregiver. Personally matched caregivers backed by Client Success Managers, care coordinators, and support staff ensure consistency, quality, and proactive oversight.
Innovation-Driven Approach
We're not content with "the way it's always been done." We invest in research, seek out best practices from leading experts, and continuously improve based on the latest science in aging, brain health, and caregiving.
Who We Are
TheKey is led by Lily Sarafan, Executive Chair and Co-Founder, and Chris Gerard, CEO. Together, they've built a team that reflects a wide range of industry experience in home care, senior care, and healthcare, along with deep expertise in technology, operations, transformation, and customer experience.
But what unites everyone at TheKey, from our leadership team to our caregivers, is a shared passion for reimagining what aging at home can look like. We're driven by a common mission: helping more older adults get the services and tools they need to age well, where and how they want.

"The Key has been instrumental in caring for my mother’s needs in order for her to remain in her home in her later years. Case manager, staffing manager and caregivers put her needs first and have given me such peace of mind knowing that she is receiving the best care possible. I am so grateful for the love and care my mother receives daily. I highly recommend The Key!"

What Drives Us Forward
We've spent 25 years building a better way to age at home. But we're not done.
Every day, we're working to open new possibilities for long-term aging at home, developing innovative care approaches, training exceptional caregivers, partnering with leading experts, and advocating for policies that support people's right to age where they choose.
We're in this for the long haul.
Because we believe that aging at home shouldn't mean sacrificing independence, dignity, or quality of life. It should mean living fully, surrounded by what and who you love, supported by people who care, and confident that you have what you need to thrive.
That's the future we're building. And we're honored to build it alongside the families who trust us with their care.
