VA Benefits for In-Home Care
As a Veterans Affairs partner, TheKey helps eligible veterans access VA-funded home care through two key programs designed to help you live safely and independently at home.
VA Homemaker and Respite Care Programs
These VA-funded programs serve Veterans of any age who:
- Need help with activities of daily living (ADLs)
- Are experiencing social isolation
- Have caregivers experiencing burden or in need of respite
Care must be authorized by the VA before you can receive services from TheKey. We guide you through every step of the authorization process, from initial consultation to eligibility support to insurance coordination, ensuring you understand your options and helping you access the benefits you've earned.

What Care Looks Like at Every Stage
Whether you’re managing service-related injuries, navigating the challenges of aging, or need support during recovery, we provide care that adapts to your specific situation and respects your independence.

Early Support
When you need help maintaining independence
✓ You’re managing daily life but could use help with housekeeping, meals, or transportation
✓ You’re feeling isolated or disconnected since leaving service or retiring
✓ You’re recovering from a procedure or managing a service-related condition
✓ Your spouse or family caregiver needs regular relief and respite
✓ You want to stay ahead of challenges and maintain your independence at home
What TheKey provides at this stage:
A caregiver who understands military culture provides regular support—preparing meals, handling light housekeeping, providing transportation to VA appointments or social activities, and offering companionship that reduces isolation. For family caregivers, respite care gives you the break you need to recharge. You maintain your routines and independence while getting support that makes daily life easier and safer.
Increasing Needs
When consistent daily support becomes necessary
✓ You need help with personal care, mobility, or managing multiple medications
✓ Service-related injuries or conditions are affecting your daily functioning
✓ You’re experiencing cognitive changes that require specialized support
✓ You have chronic health conditions that need monitoring and coordination with VA healthcare
✓ Your family caregiver is stretched thin and you both need more consistent help
What TheKey provides at this stage:
Daily caregivers provide personal care, mobility assistance, and medication reminders—all coordinated with your VA healthcare team. Your Caregiver and Client Success Managers ensure seamless communication between your caregiver, your family, and VA providers, adjusting your plan as needs evolve. You get consistent, professional support that honors your service while maintaining your dignity and independence at home.

Complex Care
When intensive, specialized support is essential
✓ You need 24/7 care for complex medical conditions or advanced mobility limitations
✓ You’re navigating advanced dementia or cognitive changes
✓ You want comprehensive home care instead of facility placement
✓ You’re receiving end-of-life care and want to be comfortable at home
What TheKey provides at this stage:
Round-the-clock care that brings facility-level support into your home—live-in caregivers trained in complex medical needs and Client Success and Caregiver Managers who oversee every detail. You stay in your home with the intensive, professional support your condition requires, surrounded by familiar things and consistent caregivers who treat you with the respect you’ve earned.

Contact Our VA Benefits Team
Call us at (866) 425-2180 or request information online. We’ll explain the VA Homemaker and Respite Care Programs, answer your questions, and help determine if you may be eligible for VA-funded home care.
Complete Eligibility Process
We guide you through completing the required VA Benefits authorization form with your doctor. Our team assists with the paperwork and submission process, and can also review any additional long-term care insurance benefits you may have.
Timeline: VA authorization typically takes 2-4 weeks after submission, though timing can vary.
Care Begins Once Authorized
After the VA authorizes your benefits, we conduct an in-home assessment, create your personalized care plan, and match you with caregivers who understand military culture. Care typically begins within days of VA authorization.
Questions About VA Benefits and Home Care
The VA Homemaker and Respite Care Programs serve Veterans of any age who need help with activities of daily living, are experiencing social isolation, or have family caregivers who need respite. Eligibility is determined by the VA based on your specific situation and needs. We can help you understand the requirements and guide you through the application process, but final authorization comes from the VA.
VA-funded care through the Homemaker and Respite Care Programs covers the cost of authorized home care services for eligible veterans. Private pay care is available to any veteran (or anyone else) regardless of VA eligibility, and you pay directly for services. We serve veterans through both pathways and can help you understand your options based on your situation and benefits.
The timeline varies depending on your specific situation and VA processing times. Once you submit the required authorization form with your doctor’s signature, it typically takes 2-4 weeks for VA review and approval, though it can be faster or slower. We stay in communication throughout the process and can begin care as soon as authorization is received.
Yes. We specifically train our caregivers who work with veterans on military culture, common service-related conditions, and the unique experiences and perspectives many veterans bring. We also carefully match caregivers based on personality and shared experiences when possible, ensuring you’re comfortable with the person providing your care.
Absolutely. Care coordination with your VA healthcare team is a core part of our service. We communicate with your VA doctors and specialists, attend appointments with you if helpful, ensure medication schedules are followed, and provide updates on any changes in your condition. This coordination ensures everyone is working from the same information and your care is fully integrated.
If you’re outside our current VA program service areas (California, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington), we may still be able to help through private pay options depending on your location. Contact us to discuss your situation—we’re actively expanding our service areas and can guide you to resources even if we can’t serve you directly yet.
If your VA benefits application isn’t approved, we can discuss alternative options including private pay care, long-term care insurance if you have it, or reapplying to the VA if your situation changes. We’re committed to helping you access the care you need, and we’ll work with you to find a path forward regardless of VA authorization status.
